Ripley Town Council is committed to enhancing biodiversity and caring for our environment at Greenwich Community Sports Hub.
Through a range of projects, we are creating habitats for wildlife, improving our outdoor spaces and inspiring our community to connect with nature.
Wildflower Meadow
A new wildflower meadow is taking shape at Greenwich Recreation Ground, thanks to the Ripley Wild Flowerers, Ripley Town Council, Amber Valley councillors and local volunteers.
Following extensive preparation of the area next to the pond, native wildflower seeds were sown in March, including a mix of perennial species and cornfield annuals to provide colour in the meadow's first year. Additional wildflower plugs have since been planted, with plans to introduce native bulbs and Alder Buckthorn saplings to further enhance the habitat.
The meadow is already beginning to flourish, bringing colour to the recreation ground and creating an important habitat for bees, butterflies and other wildlife.
Most importantly, it is bringing joy to local residents, with one regular dog walker commenting that “it brings me joy.”

Pond Restoration
Ripley Town Council is continuing its work to restore and enhance Greenwich Pond, creating a more valuable habitat for local wildlife.
Following an assessment by Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, a programme of improvements was recommended. The first stage, completed in early 2025, involved tidying the pond, removing shrubs and Typha (reeds), pruning willow and creating new hibernacula to provide shelter for wildlife.
A second stage has since been completed, clearing a further third of the site and maintaining the existing hibernacula. Further ecological work is planned, with the final third of the pond due to be cleared later this year.
The pond improvements complement the new Greenwich Wildflower Meadow, creating a connected area of diverse habitats that will benefit wildlife and enhance Greenwich Recreation Ground for the whole community.
Bird & Bat Boxes
As part of Ripley Town Council’s ongoing commitment to supporting wildlife, bird and bat boxes have been installed in the trees at Greenwich.
The boxes were handmade in 2025 by our Grounds Maintenance Operative, Kev King, using leftover plywood from the refurbishment of the Township noticeboards.
By reusing materials that might otherwise have gone to waste, the project has created valuable nesting and roosting spaces for local wildlife while also supporting our commitment to sustainable environmental improvements.
Alongside the Greenwich Pond improvements and new wildflower meadow, the bird and bat boxes are helping to create a more diverse and wildlife-friendly environment for the community to enjoy.
