Charles was elected to Ripley Town Council in 1982.  He wanted to be a Councillor to help the people in the community and get better services for them. Charles is particularly interested in having better sport facilities in the Township.

Charles is retired. He served seven years in the Royal Navy, 1948-1955 under King George VI, Queen Elizabeth II and also with Admiral Mountbatten.

He was Mayor of Ripley 1988-1989 and again 2006-2007.

Charles has had a varied political career having been a Derbyshire County Councillor for 20 years (1989-2009) and Chairman in 2003 until 2005. He was an Amber Valley Councillor for 18 years (1986-2004) and Mayor of Amber Valley 1993-1994.
